In an effort to improve the quality of telecom services, especially the issues around call drops, the Government on Wednesday said there have been some improvements over the past few days and to improve further, it would soon install towers in buildings such as Parliament.

Such a step would keep aside the myth about being called telecom towers are hazardous health and also telecom service providers (TSPs) claiming they are not allowed to install towers in Government buildings.

Speaking to media, Telecom and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that he will do his best to improve the quality of mobile services and for that TSPs and citizen have to come forward to help in the cause.

“For improvement of Parliament, I have given instructions (to officers) in installing towers – one in Annexe (already installed) and other is shortly going to come in the library,” he told reporters.

Prasad said he has also instructed MTNL that they must have in-building solutions in the North Block and South Block around the Parliament. And also, some NDMC and Postal office buildings, he said.

“They are working out on that and once the Winter Session is over, the work should be done,” he said adding that all these collective efforts have improved the quality of services and there is a need of further improvement too and his Ministry is monitoring all the situations closely.

Working closely with the local departments like municipal corporations and TSPs, there have been improvements in the mobile telephony services over the past few months, he said.

For example, of the last count of 27,598 defective towers (BTS) across the country, 13,775 have been repaired and rest of the towers will be repaired soon or new installations happen over a period of time.

Sighting example of BSNL, Prasad said the state-run TSP has installed over 25,000 BTS over the last one year and will be installing 6,000 more in future.
