Uninor’s opening up of 362 retail outlets on a single day has created world record, with the Guinness Book of World Records recognising it as the biggest retail expansion by a company.

This one-day record took Uninor 75 days of planning and 5,400 hours of execution involving 200 retail employees and covered 1.5 lakh customers in its six operating circles, the company said in a statement.

“Uninor now already has the second highest number of retail stores among all operators in its six circles,” said Uninor Chief Marketing Officer Rajeev Sethi.

In April this year, embarking on its largest expansion plans ever, the Indian arm of Norwegian telecom giant Telenor, opened 362 new retail stores in a single day. The expansion - across the six circles of Uttar Pradesh (West), Uttar Pradesh (East), Bihar (including Jharkhand), Maharashtra & Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat - increased its retail footprint to a total of 1,480 stores in the country.

The retail expansion was on back of the company announcing a Rs 500 crore investment to expand its network and distribution infrastructure by 30 per cent in its six operational circles. It will re-deploy 5,000 sites from closed down circles for geographical expansion in existing six circles in the same statement.

Telenor, also sought FIPB approval to up its stake in Uninor from 74 per cent to 100 per cent for an additional investment of Rs 780 crore.
