Social messaging platform WhatsApp has appointed Abhijit Bose as its India head. He will join WhatsApp by early 2019.

Bose will be based out of Gurugram and will be responsible for building WhatsApp’s first full country-team outside of its headquarters in California, according to a press statement.

Bose and his team will focus on helping businesses, connect with their customers. Earlier this year, WhatsApp released the WhatsApp Business app for small business owners and the WhatsApp Business API to serve larger businesses that engage with customers at scale. Today, there are over one million users for these WhatsApp business products in India, the statement said.

Bose joins WhatsApp from Ezetap where he was co-founder and CEO. Founded in 2011, Ezetap is an electronic payments company.

The move comes after the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) pressed the company to have a corporate presence in India and also a grievance officer.

WhatsApp was under stress after the forward messages circulating in the platform lead to violence and mob killings. The Ministry also sent two notices in July to the company mandating it to work out a more effective solution to tackle fake news.
