Chinese handset maker Xiaomi is turning out to be the biggest gainer in the ongoing festival sales across Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal and Tata CLiQ.

“Last year, we sold half a million phones in the festival month of Diwali. This year, with well-planned launches and six months of planning, we were able to achieve the same number in just three days,” Manu Jain, India Head, Xiaomi, told BusinessLine .

Redmi 3S, the company’s mid-range device, had a stock of about 2,70,00 devices for the sale at Flipkart, which was sold out within a day. It was the top selling item during the Flipkart Big Billion Day sale. Similarly, Redmi Note 3 was the top selling device at Amazon and currently all the devices are out of stock despite Xiaomi putting its manufacturing partner Foxconn to work overtime to provide a large quantity.

The company said it will replenish the stock in the next couple of days to take advantage of the ongoing festival demand.

Jain said that no other mobile phone brand has been able to achieve such a number ever in India.

A million every quarter In the last five quarters, Xiaomi has been selling over 1 million devices each quarter, a number that Xiaomi could be able to achieve in just a week or so if the momentum for its devices continues. “Since we are a technology company, we used a lot of technology to plan well for the festival sale this year. Based on how many people were searching for our phones on Google versus how many were searching for competitors we could estimate what the demand for our products would be,” said Jain.

“We also carefully observed the impact of any offers that we ran on this trend. This helped us decide what offers would work and how many phones need to be ready before the festival sales begin,” he added.

Xiaomi this year has sold more than half a million smartphones in less than 72 hours across partner sales, which means more than five lakh Mi and Redmi devices were sold across 4 online platforms — Flipkart, Amazon, Snapdeal and Tata CLiQ — in less than three days or two phones were sold every second during the last 3 days.

“Last year, we sold 0.5 million phones in 30 days. This year, we have sold 0.5 million phones within three days. These numbers have been driven by the phenomenal customer interest in Xiaomi products across all the online partner platforms and a very minor fraction from offline,” Jain said.
