Only half the stocks that arrived at the Erode turmeric market were sold on Friday.

“ For want of demand, exporters kept away from buying. Stockists who had purchased over 25 lakh bags of turmeric were reluctant to buy at higher prices and quoted lower prices, and purchased minimally”, said Mr R.K.V. Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.

For the past one week, exporters have been receiving orders from North India for only hybrid and best quality turmeric. Having fulfilled the contracts, they have stopped purchasing.

Even the Hybrid Salem crop decreased by Rs 80 a quintal. Other varieties fell by Rs 150 a quintal. Stockists have ruled out any more purchases at current prices, having invested a huge sum already in the commodity.
