Turmeric witnessed brisk sales on Wednesday as traders in Erode received good orders from North India.

“Erode traders received orders suddenly and so they have started buying turmeric, mainly the new variety. Out of the arrival of 4,500 bags in the four markets in Erode, 3,600 bags were sold but the prices were stable, as it was on Tuesday,” said Mr R.V. Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.

“The present demand will continue for another week or 10 days, so the sales would be high. Farmers will also bring their commodity in large number.” Demand for old turmeric is less. The local ‘masala' producers are buying the old crop.

In the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association sales yard, finger (old crop) variety was sold at Rs 9,609-12,646 a quintal and the root variety for Rs 9,406-12,585.

The finger (new crop) variety fetched Rs 7,116-12,407, the root variety commanded Rs 7,000-12,665 a quintal. Out of arrival of 1,200 bags, 545 were sold. Of this, 80 per cent of the sales was new crop.

In Gobichettipalayam Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger variety was sold at Rs 9,805-13,101 and the root variety at Rs 7,700-12,516. All the 174 bags that arrived for sale were purchased.

In Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger variety was sold at Rs 8,889-10,536 and the root variety at Rs 8,234-9,000 a quintal. Out of arrival of 164 bags, 125 new crop were sold.

In the Regulated Marketing Committee also the new crop sales were encouraging.
