After ruling flat at Rs 2.10 a piece last week, prices for eggs have been raised to Rs 2.25 on increase in consumption with the end of the Lent season.
Sources told Business Line that with the Lent season coming to an end, consumption will pick up gradually and hence, prices will also rise.
Egg prices touched a record high of Rs 3.02 a piece in January, buoyed by the cold wave in northern India – a major poultry consumer.
With an equally hot summer that the North is experiencing now, the consumption has dropped.
Moreover, with the ongoing summer vacation, egg supply to the schools under the Noon Meal Scheme, too, has been hit.
Statistics available with the NECC show that the daily egg production in the zone has increased by over 21 lakh (from 2.55 crore in March 2010 to 2.76 crore in February 2011).
Meanwhile, NECC has increased the price of its layer birds to Rs 45a kg from Rs 40 last week.
Palladam-based Broiler Coordination Committee has slashed the prices of cull birds to Rs 62 a kg from Rs 66 last week to increase the offtake as there is a good demand for animal protein during summer.
