Despite heavy arrivals, prices of dara wheat ruled firm around Rs 1,185 a quintal because of high demand for flour, on Tuesday.

Around 800 tonnes of the variety arrived from Uttar Pradesh, of which 300 tonnes were offloaded at the mills directly while 500 tonnes were procured by the Food and Civil Supplies Department. Mill delivery was at Rs 1,180 a quintal, while it traded at Rs 1,185 at retail outlets.

Mr Subhash Chander, a wheat trader, told Business Line that fresh demand from small flour millers had lifted flour prices in last few days. This is a temporary phase of high demand; market may witness some correction in the coming days, he added.

On the other hand, desi wheat varieties witnessed a mixed trend, around 200 tonnes of different varieties of desi wheat arrived from Madhya Pradesh.

Tohfa variety continued to witness an uptrend, rose further by Rs 30 and quoted at 2,250 a quintal. Maruti ruled flat at Rs 1,900, Lal Quila dropped by Rs 25 and was at Rs 1,950 while the A-1 variety was trading at Rs 2,170 a quintal.

Flour Prices

With some buying in the market, flour prices continued to rise: prices went up by Rs 45 and quoted at Rs 1,250 for a 90 kg bag. Flour prices had witnessed a good rally over the last week. Flour is ruling around Rs 1,250 for a 90 kg bag against Rs 1,190 quoted on June 7. Chokar prices continued to rule firm and quoted at Rs 585 for a 49-kg bag.
