Global black tea production has increased marginally by 1.28 per cent in the first 10 months of the calendar year compared with the same period a year ago.

The increase would have been more had it not been for a drop in Indian and Ugandan output.

Till October, India lost 4.89 million kg (mkg) but produced 1025.90 mkg. Uganda’s production fell by 7.05 mkg to 32.09 mkg. These are the only two countries which have reported lower production this year.

In the 10 months, Kenya produced 6.15 mkg more at 361.42 mkg and Sri Lanka 3.55 mkg more at 282.59 mkg. Bangladesh’s output rose by 2.13 mkg to 55.87 mkg.

The overall global black tea output is up at 1,843.12 mkg against 1,838.06 mkg.

Indian production would have been more but for the 11.54 mkg drop suffered by North Indian plantations due to adverse weather. North India’s output dropped to 822.37 mkg from 833.91 mkg. South India produced 6.65 mkg more at 203.53 mkg from 196.88 mkg.
