Sugar futures fell by 0.71 per cent to Rs 2,651 per quintal today on off-loading of positions by speculators. However, rise in spot demand due to the upcoming festivals limited the losses.
At the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, sugar for delivery in August dropped by Rs 19 or 0.71 per cent, to Rs 2,651 per quintal, with an open interest of 19.980 lots.
Similarly, sugar for delivery in September fell by Rs 17 or 0.62 per cent, to Rs 2,718 per quintal, with an open interest of 26,390 lots.
Analysts said sugar futures prices fell after speculators reduced their positions amid higher supplies, but pick-up in spot demand for the upcoming festive season capped the losses.
