Spot turmeric prices increased marginally on Tuesday as sales improved.

“The finger and root varieties increased Rs 150-200/quintal. But, it looks to be a temporary phenomenon. Now, traders have started buying to fulfil their orders, received from one or two places in North India,” said Mr R.K.V. Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.

He said: “We are expecting good demand from North India only from mid-August. Till then, sales will be moderate.” Prices in Nizamabad and Sangli were steady, almost matching Erode price. So some merchants placed orders with Erode bulk buyers. On Tuesday, arrivals were 8,500 bags, sales were high, as over 60 per cent of arrivals were sold.

Turmeric growers said that the current price is not remunerative, but they need to sell to raise the next crop. Currently, their income is through the inter-crop raised in between the rows of turmeric. The cost cultivation was high for the turmeric and the present selling rate has caused loss to turmeric farmers.”
