The Third India Tea Festival, currently being held at Abu Dhabi, is targeting an export market of 620 million kg. India's present share of this market is around 130 mkg.
“Thus there is considerable scope for pushing India teas into these markets”, according to a statement issued from Abu Dhabi by Indian Tea Association, the organiser of the festival. “Some 32 Indian tea producers, exporters and auctioneers are interacting with almost an equal number of buyers, packeteers and others from countries such as Iran, Pakistan, Egypt, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Russia and Kazakhstan”, the statement points out.
Inaugurating the festival on Friday, Mr C.S. Bedi, Chairman of ITA, and also Managing Director of Rossell Tea Limited, indicated that the Indian Government in partnership with tea industry and trade would mount special promotion programme over next five years in the markets of West Asia, Russia and CIS countries holding out big promise for Indian producers and exporters. The festival, he felt, would provide the Indian delegates with an opportunity to understand the nuances of these markets such as consumption pattern, market structure and price preferences. Mr A.N. Singh, Vice-Chairman, ITA, and Managing Director, Goodricke Group Ltd and Mr A.K. Bhargava, Additional Vice-Chairman, ITA, and Managing Director, Apeejay Tea Ltd, also addressed the inaugural session.
Tea tasting
A unique feature of this year's festival has been the Tea Tasting Sessions displaying teas of all India origins namely Assam Valley, Cachar, Dooars, Terai, Darjeeling and Nilgiris. These teas represent the profile of quality exports from India and the Tasting Sessions have sought to acquaint the importers present at the festival with the wide range of teas and the price points. The presence of auctioneers has added considerable value for the importers to be fully acquainted with the current market trends. While the Buyer Seller Meet is structured to facilitate one to one interactions between companies attending the festival, there is also sufficient time available for informal networking, the statement said.
