The price of spot turmeric shows an increase of Rs 600 a quintal in the Regulated Marketing Committee, but the price of the hybrid variety dropped on Thursday.

“Suddenly the price in the Regulated Market has improved by Rs 600 a quintal for turmeric, but due to want of demand for the hybrid variety of turmeric, the price has dropped by Rs 420/quintal. Only limited bags of hybrid variety arrived for sale, and out of this due to quality, few traders purchased limited stocks by quoting a low price,” said Mr R. K.V. Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.

But he said the local variety had some few local orders and so the price in Gobichettipalayam Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Society improved by Rs 340/quintal. Though the arrival was reduced to 8,000 bags, the sales were only 45 per cent. The prices in the North Indian markets of Nizamabad and Sangli are less than the Erode market; similarly, the price in the futures market is also very low. So North Indian buyers did not place orders with Erode traders. Consequently, the sales were very poor and stocks with the turmeric farmers remained unsold.

At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association, finger variety was sold at Rs 4,050-5,704/quintal, root variety, Rs 3,900-5,351/quintal.

Salem Crop: The finger variety was sold at Rs 5,169-6,399/quintal, root variety, Rs 4,917-5,651/quintal. 2,089 bags of turmeric arrived for sales, and 370 were sold.

At the Gobichettipalayam Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Society, finger variety was sold at Rs 4,869-6,039/quintal, root variety, Rs 4,190-5,639/quintal. All 143 bags kept for sales were sold.

At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, finger variety turmeric was sold at Rs 4,711-5,811/quintal, root variety, Rs 4,689-5,509/quintal. Out of the 896 bags kept for sale, 879 were sold.

At the Regulated Marketing Committee, the finger variety fetched Rs 5,639- 6,329/quintal, root variety, Rs 4,930-5,689/quintal. Out of the 604 bags , 500 were sold.
