Spot turmeric prices ruled steady on Thursday despite lower sales.

“Erode traders are receiving moderate demand from all over the country”, said Mr R. K.V. Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association. But the price in the regulated market showed an improvement of just Rs 100 a quintal, he added.

He said: “The price in other centres like Nizamabad and Sangli are weak and also the arrivals there was below 8,000 bags a day. This has reflected here in the sale price. Further there was no appreciable increase in price at the futures market. The traders are quoting the price in Erode, purchase the same.”

Mr Ravishankar also said that on Thursday out of the arrival of 15,000 bags, 50 per cent of the stock were sold. Some farmers expecting a higher price for the produce refused to sell the turmeric.

In the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association, finger variety was sold at Rs 7,300 to Rs 9,674 a quintal and the root variety at Rs 7,236 to Rs 8,980.

The finger variety of the Salem crop fetched Rs 9,889 to Rs 11,219 whereas the root variety was sold at Rs 9,074 to Rs 9,419. Out of the total arrival of 4,612 bags, 500 were sold.

At the Regulated Marketing Committee, the finger variety was sold at Rs 9,137 to Rs 9,859, whereas the root variety fetched Rs 8,819 to Rs 9,209. Out of the arrival of 1,570 bags, 1,470 were sold.

At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger variety was sold at Rs 8,699 to Rs 9,886 and the root variety at Rs 8,390 to Rs 9,177. At the Gobichettipalayam Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Society, finger variety fetched Rs 8800 to Rs 9919 and the root variety was priced between Rs 8,879 and Rs 9,079.
