A heavy demand from bulk buyers on Tuesday led to increased in prices of both varieties of the Salem turmeric crop.

“For the past couple of days, traders have been seeing normal demand from various places for spot turmeric. On Tuesday, heavy demand for the Salem crop was seen. Consequent to this, the price of the finger variety of Salem crop improved by Rs 650 a quintal. Prices of other varieties remained stable,” said Mr R.K.V. Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.

He said that the arrival decreased to 15,000 bags on Tuesday and 50 per cent of the stocks was sold.

The price is stable in other centres also. North Indian traders have placed some orders from Monday, so sales will improve in coming days.

At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association Sales centre, the finger variety was sold at Rs 7,668-9,666 a quintal, the root variety at Rs 7,500-8,619.

Salem Crop : The finger variety fetched Rs 10,009- 11,059 The root variety quoted at Rs 8,739-9,059. Out of arrival of 4,523 bags, 500-odd were sold.

At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger variety was sold at Rs 8,255-9,669, the root variety Rs 8,027-9,007. Out of arrival of 1,227 bags, 1,168 were sold.

At the Regulated Marketing Committee, the finger variety fetched Rs 9,146-9,659, the root variety Rs 8,459-8,799. Out of arrival of 1089 bags, 875 were sold. At the Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger variety was sold at Rs 8,166-9,739, the root variety Rs 8,519-8,939. Out of arrival of 170 bags, 165 were sold.
