The recent rain fall has brought wheat procurement to a standstill. Just around 500 tonnes of new wheat arrived at the Karnal grain market terminal and ruled at Rs 1,120 a quintal.

Due to heavy rainfall and hailstorm, the crop has been affected in many parts of the region and the arrivals may start in next 4-5 days, said Mr Tara Chand Sharma, a wheat trader. The crop has been damages and in the affected areas, the yield has dropped 2-3 quintals an acre, he added.

Government-owned procurement agencies will lift only the crop that has already been purchased. Procurement will start again once the dried crop begins to arrive, said Mr Sharma.

Due to the inadequate space available under the sheds at the grain market, the crop is lying open and farmers are trying to lower the moisture by spreading the crop and drying it in the grain market.

Around 20 tonnes of dara variety, old wheat, arrived and the mill delivery was Rs 1,190 a quintal on Monday.

Low trading pulled the prices of desi wheat down. Prices of Tohfa variety dropped by Rs 100 and quoted at Rs 2,200 a quintal against the levels of Rs 2,300 quoted last week. Bhojan King was quoted Rs 2,200 while the Nokia variety was quoted at Rs 2,050 a quintal.

Flour Prices

Following some fresh buying and low availability of good quality wheat, flour prices witnessed a good rally. Flour prices rose by Rs 60-65 and quoted at Rs 1,195-1,200 for a 90-kg bag against the levels of 1,130 quoted last weekend. Branded flour such as Om Bhog and Lal Quila were quoted at Rs 140 and 145 for a 10-kg bag respectively.
