India’s cumulative tea production in calendar 2016 which trailed behind 2015 till August, managed to equal the level of September end and marginally increased by October end.

November was a relatively better month for production in both North and South. By November end, production had increased by 2.17 per cent instilling hopes among producers that when the December data is released, the country would have created yet another record in production in 2016.

“The Tea Board has just released November production data which shows an impressive gain of 14.73 per cent with North posting an increase of 14.60 per cent and South 15.48 per cent,” Rajesh Gupta, compiler, Global Tea Digest 2016 , told BusinessLine .

“Our compilation shows that cumulative production in the 11 months increased to 1,176.41 million kg (mkg) from 1,151.31 mkg. This increase of 25.04 mkg marked a gain of 2.17 per cent,” Gupta disclosed.

North Indian production in the 11 months rose by a whopping 41.44 mkg to total 979.84 mkg. Assam continued to top India’s production table at 618.29 mkg (up 10.81 mkg) followed by West Bengal at 335.76 mkg (up 29.21 mkg).

With adverse weather pulling down the production in earlier months, South Indian output till November fell by 16.40 mkg to dip to 196.57 mkg.

At current reckoning, with the data wanted for just one month, industry sources predict India’s production in 2016 to rise to around 1,230 mkg — a new record — from 1,209 mkg produced in 2015.
