India’s tea production in the first half of calendar 2016 has risen by 2.31 per cent over 2015 despite a sharp fall in South India, thanks to higher output in North India.

“Tea Board has now come out with the production data for June and our compilation shows that in the first half of 2016, India’s overall production rose to 416.66 million kg (mkg) from 407.26 mg in Jan-June 2015. This increase of 9.40 mkg marked a growth of 2.31 per cent”, Rajesh Gupta, compiler of annual ‘Global Tea Digest’, told BusinessLine .

North India produced 30.98 mkg more to reach 314.74 mkg. Assam topped the country’s production table at 194.65 mkg (up 23.27 mkg).

West Bengal produced 7.48 mkg more to soar to 111.44 mkg. All producing regions in the North posted an higher production except Darjeeling and Terai where the output dropped marginally.

In South India, production fell by 21.58 mkg to dip to 101.92 mkg.

Here, Tamil Nadu lost 15.37 mkg to dip to 70.12 mkg and Kerala 5.51 mkg to fall to 29.13 mkg. Karnataka’s output also fell marginally.
