Turmeric sales at all centres have started increasing, also reflected at the Erode market. Prices for new turmeric varieties rose Rs 100-150 a quintal. On Monday, prices for old turmeric dropped Rs 1,000 a quintal because of lack of demand,? said Mr R.V. Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.

Though farmers brought limited quantity for sale, the sales at the four turmeric markets were satisfactory, and prices did not increase sharply.

The bulk buyers received sudden large orders, so spot turmeric sales increased in Erode. But prices were stable for the old turmeric, as on Monday, said Mr Ravishankar.

The turmeric growers said, ?The new crop is fetching low price, so we are not interested in selling it at present. We will keep the stock for another 15-30 days and keep a close watch on the market. If demand increases and prices improve, we will immediately sell the crop.? The new crop accounted for 85 per cent of the sales, while the remaining 15 percent were old crop
