Want to market sugar for diabetics or a nutraceutical for improving immunity? If yes, then coconut might be just the thing for you.
Entrepreneurs can produce capsules of virgin coconut oil, or manufacture coconut sugar, coconut jaggery, coconut honey and other products as the Kasaragod-based Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) is ready to transfer technologies for the benefit of entrepreneurs.
P Chowdappa, CPCRI Director, told BusinessLine that the institute has developed technologies that can help develop several products from coconut.
Giving the break-up of the usage of coconut in the country, he said around 35 per cent of coconut produced in the country is used for producing oil, 45 per cent for domestic purposes, 15 per cent as tender coconuts and five per cent as value-added products.
Since the consumption of coconut oil is falling, CPCRI is now diversifying coconut as a food crop, beverage, a nutraceutical and a medicinal product.
Highlighting the nutraceutical aspects of coconut, he said already the institute has transferred technology on the preparation of capsules of virgin coconut oil to two industries.
The institute will be showcasing technologies to the industry on January 31 at its Kasaragod campus, Kerala.
