NITI Aayog full-time member VK Saraswat on Wednesday inaugurated a pilot plant in the city to recover high-value minerals from fly ash.
The indigenous plant located at the premises of city-based Star Trace Private Ltd will recover major minerals such as aluminium oxide and iron oxide besides extracting elements such as barium, beryllium, chromium, copper and manganese from fly ash generated by coal-based power plants.
“Thermal power plants have been accumulating fly ash over the years in ‘ash ponds’. Using this technology, the huge pile of waste can be put to commerciall use,” said Saraswat.
The company has also built a proprietary technology for Hindustan Copper Ltd to extract gold and silver from copper ore tailing.
