Jasmine flower prices have shown an uptrend in Erode.
“Jasmine commanded a price of ₹160 a kg on Friday and all the six tonnes brought to the market were sold. One tonne of ‘mullai’ flower that arrived was also sold at ₹120 a kg. The area of cultivation of the two flowers has increased in recent times and we expect more quantities to arrive soon,” said Muthuswamy, President, Sathyamangalam Flower Growers Association. About 500 kg of Sambangi and more than two tonnes of marigold flowers were also sold on Friday.
Jasmine is cultivated on over 25,000 acres (10,000 hectares) in Sathyamangalam area of Erode district. More than 1,500 farmers are involved in the cultivation of the flower along with mullai and sambangi flowers.
The flower market (shandy) here reopened a week back after remaining closed for more than two months during the lockdown. and the sale was commenced a week back.
Krishnamurthy, secretary of the association, said the demand for jasmine and mullai would go up if temples and marriage halls are reopened.
