The small cardamom witnessed a slightly easier trend on Monday and from mid-last week on increased supply.

The arrivals last week showed an upsurge as the second round of picking has reached its peak.

Total arrivals increased to 550 tonnes from 388 tonnes the week before.

At today's auction conducted by the Cardamom Planters Association (CPA) in Bodinayakannur the average price declined to ₹1,039.25 a kg from the previous Monday's average of ₹1,075.18 a kg.

Ranganathan, a Bodi-based dealer attributed the drop to inferior quality of the material. A total of around 12 tonnes of cardamom arrived and of this 11 tonnes were traded with a maximum price of ₹1,407 a kg.

“However, the prices likely to stay steady/firm in the coming days because of empty inventories in the consuming markets and with the possibility of supply not picking up from the current levels”, P C Punnoose, General Manager, CPMC told Business Line .

Exporters were active and they have bought an estimated 80 tonnes of cardamom last week,he said.

Individual auction average during the week fell to ₹1,083.29 a kg from ₹1,103.91 a kg the previous week and it was vacillating between ₹1,060and ₹1,106 a kg.

Total arrivals during the current season up to August 26, 2017 were at 1,848 tonnes and the sales were at 1,793 tonnes.

Individual auction average for the season as on August 26 was at ₹1,069.81 a kg.

Prices in the open market were nearly steady today at Bodinayakannur, trade sources said. They were (in ₹/kg) : 8mm green bold 1,525; 7 -8mm 1,200; 6-7mm 960. Good bulk was being traded at Rs1,020-1,050 a kg.

The weather conditions were favourable with good rains of late in the growing regions.
