The small cardamom markets, after falling sharply over the past 15 days, recovered last weekend by around ₹100 a kg on good demand amid supply squeeze at auctions held in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
At the auction held by the Cardamom Planters Association in Bodinayakannur today, total arrival stood at around 6 tonnes, of which 5 tonnes were traded. The maximum price was ₹1,181 a kg and the auction average was ₹904.16.
Farmers who were holding cardamom pushed their produce into the market and that in turn pulled the prices down sharply, PC Punnoose, General Manager, CPMC, told BusinessLine . At the CPMC auction on April 20, the average price consequently fell to ₹895 a kg from 1,166 a kg on April 6, he said. However, a self imposed market intervention later by the sellers appears to have pushed up the market on Saturday by around₹100 a kg.
