The Tea Board has announced that the average price to be paid by bought leaf factories for the purchase of green leaf from small growers in The Nilgiris during January should be ₹15.69 per kg.

This is less than last month’s level by 40 paise but more than the level in January 2018 by ₹2.69

Tea Board’s Deputy Director CS Hariprakash said that this price was fixed based on the consolidated auction sale average price of CTC teas from bought leaf factories during December 2018.

He said that all bought leaf factories in the district have been instructed to pay this price for their purchase in January.

He has instructed Tea Board’s field officers to ensure that no factory in their jurisdiction paid less than this price.

The bought leaf factories are not happy. “We have been requesting the Board to fix the price for the green leaf at the end of each month based on the price we get at the auctions during the concerned month as that alone will cause recovery of the raw material cost”, Ramesh Bhojarajan, President, The Nilgiri Bought Leaf Tea Manufacturers’ Association, told Business Line .

“Now, the Board has fixed the green leaf price for January based on last month’s auction average and that too at the beginning of the month giving us no protection for the fluctuation in prices for our teas at the auctions during the weeks to come”, he explained.
