Prices of several tea varieties appreciated at Kochi auctions, witnessing a strong demand especially for CTC dust varieties.
The CTC market opened ₹3-5 a kg dearer and prices appreciated with longer margins of ₹5-10 as the sale progressed following quality. The quantity on offer in sale no 2 was 9,64,000 kg. However, the increase in price was less for medium and plainer browner teas. There was a subdued demand from exporters and they operated on medium and plainer varieties, the auctioneers Forbes, Ewart & Figgis said.
The orthodox market was lower by ₹1-3 and also witnessed some withdrawals. The quantity on offer was 13,000 kg.
In Cochin CTC dust quotation, good varieties fetched ₹117-171, mediums quoted ₹87-134 and plain grades stood at ₹68-91.
In leaf category, the market for select best Nilgiri brokens, whole leaf and Fannings in orthodox grades was steady to firm and sometimes dearer. The quantity on offer was 183,500 kg.
In CTC leaf, the market for good liquoring and blacker teas was dearer by ₹2-3 and sometimes more. The quantity on offer was 67,000 kg and there was active participation from upcountry buyers.
Monica SFD quoted the best prices of ₹171 in dust category followed by Puduthottam SFD at ₹161. In Leaf, Chamraj FOPS (Green tea) came to the top, quoting ₹329 followed by Chamraj OP at ₹321.
