A volume of 17.82 lakh kg has been catalogued for the first auction of 2019 to be conducted by the Coonoor Tea Trade Association, which will conclude on Friday. The auctions are re-opening after a fortnight’s closure for Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Following harsh winter conditions and a festival of the local tea planter/worker community, the harvest of green leaf has come down, resulting arrivals falling by 1.90 lakh kg over the last sale of 2018.
Of the 17.82 lakh kg, 16.35 lakh kg belongs to the CTC variety and only 1.47 lakh kg is orthodox. The proportion of orthodox teas continues to be low in both leaf and dust grades. Under the Leaf kind, only 99,000 kg is orthodox while 10.51 lakh kg is CTC. Among the dusts, only 48,000 kg is orthodox, while 5.84 lakh kg is CTC. In all, 11.50 lakh kg belongs to the Leaf grades and 6.32 lakh kg to Dust grades.
