Spot turmeric prices increased following fresh demand from North India.
“Traders in Erode have received some fresh demand from North India and hence offered a higher price. They procured 70 per cent of the produced that arrived.,” said RKV Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.
But turmeric growers said the current price is not enough for them. On Monday, over 500 bags of hybrid turmeric arrived for sale and all the bags were sold. After several days, the arrival of turmeric bags to the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society increased to over 1,000 bags. On Monday, 1,347 bags were received out of which 1,244 were sold.
At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association sales yard, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹3,189-6,534 a quintal, the root variety ₹3,119-5,849.
Salem HybridThe finger variety fetched ₹5,819-6,874, the root variety ₹5,093-6,087. Of the 918 bags that arrived, 387 were sold.
At the Regulated Market Committee, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹5,379-6,601 a quintal, the root variety ₹5,239-6,006 a quintal. Of the 610 bags that arrived, 550 were sold.
At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹5,569-6,642, the root variety at ₹5,217-6,029. Of the 1,347 bags put for sale, 1,244 bags found takers.
At the Gobichettipalayam Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger turmeric fetched ₹5,169-6,589, the root variety ₹4,216-5,869. All the 147 bags were traded.
