The sale of turmeric in the four markets at Erode has declined as the farmers brought only medium and poor quality turmeric.
“Though the farmers are having adequate stock of good quality turmeric with them, they are bringing medium and poor quality turmeric for sale. The buyers quoting decreased price purchase limited stock to supply them to local masala firms and to turmeric grinding units,” said RKV Ravishankar, a trader.
On Tuesday, 2,000 bags arrived for sale and 60 per cent stocks were sold. The farmers are keeping more than eight lakh bags of turmeric including hybrid variety with them, expecting a good price for their commodity. Traders expect fresh upcountry demand from November.
Regarding the price, both the varieties of turmeric in all the markets were up ₹100 a quintal.
At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association, finger turmeric was sold at ₹6,019-8,369 and root variety at ₹5,639-7,669 a quintal. Of the arrival of 1,196 bags, 638 were sold.
At the Regulated Marketing Society, finger turmeric went for ₹6,777-7,836; root variety for ₹6,538-7,469. Of the 128 bags kept for sale, 83 were sold.
At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, finger turmeric fetched ₹6,958-8,600; root variety ₹6,599-7,749. All the 621 bags offered were sold.
