The rupee trimmed its early gains but was still trading strong by 9 paise at 66.21 in the evening session on dollar selling by exporters and banks amid strong equity market.

Forex dealers said besides selling of the American unit by exporters and banks, weakness in the dollar against other currencies supported the rupee.

The rupee opened strong by 24 paise at 66.06 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market today. It hovered in a range of 66.23 and 66.04 before being quoted at 66.21 at 4.30 pm local time.

Yesterday, the rupee had lost 27 paise to close at 66.30 on sustained dollar demand from banks and importers in view of persistent foreign capital outflows.

Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex ended higher by 359.54 points or 1.41 per cent at 25,841.92.
