The Nifty and the Sensex ended flat on Wednesday though they were in the green.
The Nifty closed at 5,121, up 17 points, while the Sensex closed at 16,897, up 37 points.
Metals, Capital Goods and Healthcare and Power indices were the top performers of the day.
Volatility was down 2 per cent and the India Vix clsoed at 21.03.
"Though the broader markets were choppy, strong stock specific action was seen," said Mr Milan Bavishi, Head-Research Inventure Growth and Securities.
"The outcome of US FOMC's meeting will dominate our markets tomorrow," he added.
ACC Sterlite, HCLTech, Tata Motors and Jindal Steel were the top five Nifty gainers while TCS, Bharti Airtel, DLF, Coal india and Maruti were the top losers.
