Currency market live today: Rupee falls 21 paise to close at 85.63 against US dollar

The rupee depreciated 21 paise to close at 85.63 (provisional) against the US dollar on Tuesday, on weak domestic markets and a bounce back in US treasury yields.

Forex traders said the recent surge in the US 10-year yield reflects mounting concerns over fiscal and monetary policies, driving borrowing costs higher.

Foreign fund outflows and positive crude oil prices also weighed on the rupee. However, the weak US dollar index cushioned the downside, they said.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 85.47 and moved between an intra-day high of 85.39 and a low of 85.65 against the greenback. The unit ended the session lower at 85.63 (provisional), registering a fall of 21 paise over its previous closing level.

Stock Market live today: Will APAC data centers be oversupplied in 2030?

John Lam, Managing Director at UBS, Head of APAC Property & Greater China Property Research.

This data center cycle looks different.

APAC data center (DC) capacity rose at a 27% CAGR over the past five years and looks set to grow even faster over the next three years. Will demand keep pace? Or are we facing a short-term overbuild akin to China in 2021 or fibre in the early 2000s? Which countries are best positioned? Are data center operators or power supply chain a more attractive investment? Collaborating with UBS Evidence Lab, 12 analysts across 11 verticals and covering 49 stocks, we conclude that demand is sufficiently robust to absorb rapid capacity growth. Our Monte Carlo simulations indicate minimal risk of a region-wide supply glut.

    Which countries look best positioned?

We forecast a strong demand CAGR of >20% for 2024-30E driven by increasing cloud migration (fuelled by AI) along with an AI multiplier of over 2x. Our top-down demand analysis captures GDP growth, cloud infrastructure demand, AI demand and cloud penetration adjusted for country-specific factors like land availability, energy supply and Government policy/regulations. Working with UBS Evidence Lab and other sources of data, we expect a supply CAGR of 17-18% during the same period. We estimate a 16% probability of an APAC data center supply glut. Among countries, China is most likely to have supply glut, we believe Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea data center operators look best positioned, taking into account of demand, supply, power constraints and valuation.

Invest in data center operators vs power supply chain?

Given rising data center demand, we think some countries will likely face power constraints, based on UBS Utilities team estimates, in particular Japan and India. This poses investment opportunities for the power supply chain, eg, power grid, transformer, stable system, diesel generator and liquid cooling. Using HOLT valuations, liquid cooling and stable system look more attractive than data center operators/developers, while power generator, chemical materials, grid operator, gas turbine, and transformer look less attractive.

    Stock implications

Based on country advantages, HOLT valuation and bottom-up analyst views, our top picks for the data center expansion theme include Keppel DC REIT and Singtel in Singapore; Gamuda and Telekom Malaysia in Malaysia; NextDC, DigiCo and Infratil in Australia/NZ; Bharti Airtel in India; and GDS in China.

Stock market live updates today: Akshay Chichalkar, Head of Research, Axis Securities.

“The Nifty ended 74 points lower yesterday and finished below 25,000, but the odds are high this is a result of people taking profits after Thursday’s jump. Such stalls are often seen after big up-moves, but as long as this dip does not take us below the 24753 to 24860, dip buying should emerge. Global cues remain positive, with the S&P ending higher for the sixth straight day yesterday, which was the fifth time it has done that since the early April tariff-led lows. Speaking of seasonality, the current week has seen the nifty advance in 90% of instances over the last decade, so that’s another tailwind.”

Stock market live updates today: New India Assurance Company announces financial results for the fourth quarter and full fiscal year ending March 31, 2025.

Gross Written Premium (GWP) increased by 3.86% to 43,618 Cr, compared to 41,996 Cr reported in the previous fiscal year. The company remained the market leader with a market share of 12.6%. Operational efficiency improved, leading to a reduction in the combined ratio from 120% to 117% for the year. The solvency ratio also strengthened, reaching 1.91x as of March 31, 2025, up from 1.81x in March 2024.

Girija Subramanian, Chairman and Managing Director of The New India Assurance Company Ltd. commenting on the results said, “It gives me great pleasure to inform you that NIACL has achieved an all-time high Gross Written Premium (GWP) of ₹43,618 crore in FY25, reflecting a growth of 3.86% despite challenging market conditions. Even more encouraging is that our continued emphasis on profitable growth over the past several quarters is now yielding results. Despite the rise in GWP, the company has managed to reduce its underwriting losses by 11% driven by lower claim ratio and significant reduction in operating costs. The combined ratio has improved from 119.88% in FY24 to 116.78% in FY25. This improvement could have been even greater if not for the elevated loss ratio in the Motor Third Party segment, where the much-needed premium revision has not happened yet. NIACL continues to lead the non-life insurance industry in India, with a market share of 12.6% in FY25. The company’s growth vis-à-vis the industry over recent months, is quite encouraging. The solvency ratio has improved from 1.81x in FY24 to 1.91x in FY25, underscoring the company’s financial strength. Our balance sheet remains robust, with assets under management of more than ₹98,000 crore. The company made a provision of ₹802 crore towards legacy non-moving reinsurance balances, which has also impacted the reported Profit After Tax and Return on Equity (ROE) in FY25, adjusted for which the YoY results have been excellent. Our focus in FY26 will remain on further enhancing profitability, with a strong emphasis on launching innovative products aimed at the retail and MSME segments.”

    Key Financial Highlights:

    · Gross Written Premium (GWP): ₹43,618 Cr in FY25, reflecting a 3.86 % increase over ₹41,996 Cr in FY24.

    · Combined Ratio: 117% in FY25, improving from 120% in FY24.

    · Loss Ratio: 96.61% in FY25, compared to 97.36% in FY24.

    · Solvency Ratio: 1.91x as of March 31, 2025, compared to 1.81x as of March 31, 2024.

    · Net Profit: ₹988 Cr in FY25, compared to ₹1,129 Cr in FY24 saw a decline of 12.86% due to provisions made towards legacy non-moving balances.

Stock market news: Barclays revised outlook for US economy projects 0.5% GDP growth in 2025 and 1.6% in 2026, up from earlier negative predictions; follows positive shift due to US-China trade pact

Barclays’ revised outlook for the US economy in 2025 reflects a nuanced balance between slower growth and avoided recession, driven by a critical trade agreement with China. With GDP growth now projected at 0.5% for 2025 and 1.6% for 2026, the bank underscores the importance of reduced trade tensions in fostering economic stability.

Research suggests US growth will slow in 2025, but a recession seems unlikely based on recent forecasts.

Barclays revised its outlook, now expecting 0.5% GDP growth in 2025 and 1.6% in 2026, up from earlier negative predictions.

The evidence leans toward a positive shift due to a US-China trade agreement reducing tariff tensions.

Key to this optimistic revision is a recent US-China trade agreement, which has lowered tariffs and decreased economic uncertainty. This has led Barclays to adjust its expectations, moving away from earlier concerns about a potential recession.
