Asian markets posted modest gains on Tuesday. Japanese stocks surged over 3 per cent amid reports of progress in containing radiation from an earthquake-damaged nuclear plant. Also, the yen was broadly softer on the possibility of further intervention by major central banks.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 surged 349.2 points or 3.79 per cent to 9,555.95. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng climbed 52.66 points or 0.23 per cent to 22,737.88. Singapore’s Straits Times was up 5.31 points or 0.18 per cent at 2,988.82. South Korea’s Kospi gained 9.15 points or 0.46 per cent to 2,012.57.
Australia’s S&P/Asx 200 was up 1.8 points or 0.04 per cent at 4,644.60. China’s Shanghai Composite rose 6.26 points or 0.22 per cent to 2,915.50. Taiwan’s Taiex jumped 66.83 points or 0.79 per cent to 8,534.54.
