The benchmark indices, the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty, traded on a firm note on Tuesday. They closed the session with gains of around 2 per cent each.

Sensex ended 748 points or 2.03 per cent firmer at 37,687. Nifty gained 211  points or 1.94 per cent to quote at 11,102.

The top gainers on the Sensex were Reliance (up over 7 per cent), HDFC Bank (3.80 per cent), Maruti (3.38 per cent), Axis Bank (2.78 per cent) and HDFC (2.41 per cent)

The laggards were Tech Mahindra (down 2.90 per cent), IndusInd Bank (down 2 per cent), HCL Tech (1.94 per cent), Ultratech Cement (0.94 per cent) and Infosys (0.59 per cent).

Among the BSE sectoral indices, the energy index gained nearly 6 per cent, finance was up over 2 per cent and banking 1.88 per cent.

In the previous session, the 30-share Sensex ended 667.29 points or 1.77 per cent lower at 36,939.60, while the NSE Nifty tumbled 181.85 points or 1.64 per cent to 10,891.60.

Exchange data showed that foreign institutional investors purchased equities worth Rs 7,818.49 crore on a net basis on Monday.

According to traders, heavy foreign fund inflow and positive cues from global markets cheered investors.

Bourses in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul were trading with gains in mid-day deals.

Stock exchanges on Wall Street too ended on a positive note in overnight session.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude was trading 0.86 per cent lower at $43.77 per barrel (with inputs from PTI).
