Closing Bell

The market ended marginally higher in lacklustre session even as the first day of Lok Sabha polling are still underway across 21 States. Key stocks showed mixed trend on alternative buying and selling by traders.

The Sensex ended at 38,607.01, up 21.66 points over yesterday's closing level. The index ranged between 38,649.98 and 38,460.25 during intraday session.

The Nifty 50 index too was up 12.40 points or 0.11% and ended at 11,596.70.

Key sectoral indices such as Auto, Oil & Gas and Consumer Durables achieved nearly 1 per cent gain, while Metals, IT and Banking indices have lost 1 per cent on the back of selling pressure.

Bajaj Auto shares revv up 1.50%

Bajaj Auto shares rose 1.50 per cent at Rs 2, 978.85 on the BSE with volumes of 16,279 shares as of now. On the NSE, the stock was quoted at Rs 2,987.95, up by 1.53% with volumes traded just above 3.02 lakh shares. The stock gained following improved sales numbers in March.

Bajaj Auto reported an 18 per cent rise in total sales at 3,93,351 units in March, compared to 3,34,348 units in the same month a year ago.

Total motorcycle sales during the month grew by 20 per cent to 3,23,538 units from 2,69,939 units in the same month last year, the company said in a BSE filing. Bajaj Auto said its total commercial vehicle sales during the month under review went up by 8 per cent to 69,813 units as against 64,409 units sold in March 2018.

Vedanta falls after top UK court says Zambians can sue co in England

Rupee slips against dollar in early trade

The rupee fell 9 paise to 69.20 against the US dollar in opening trade Thursday on increased demand for the greenback from importers and banks.

Forex dealers said, strengthening of the American currency in the overseas market weighed on the domestic currency. However, sustained foreign fund inflows supported the rupee and restricted the fall.
