Closing bell
The Sensex ended marginally lower by 22.21 points or 0.06 per cent at 36,351.23 and the Nifty down 23.35 points or 0.21 per cent at 10,957.10.
Domestic sentiment was hit as traders were reluctant to make fresh bets ahead of the voting on the no-confidence motion against the NDA Government on Friday. Weakening of rupee to 69.06 against the dollar intraday also weighed on investor sentiment.
After opening higher at 36,509.08, the Sensex hit intraday high of 36,515.58 and a low of 36,279.33. It finally settled at 36,351.23, down 22.21 points, or 0.06 per cent.
The 50-share NSE index Nifty ended 23.35 points, or 0.21 per cent lower at 10,957.10. Intraday, it hovered between 11,006.50 and 10,935.45.
Top five Sensex gainers were Vedanta, YES Bank, ITC, Bharti Airtel and Adani Ports, while the major losers were Kotak Bank, L&T, Hero MotoCorp, Tata Steel and Coal India.
As per provisional data, domestic institutional investors bought shares worth Rs 111.01 crore, while foreign portfolio investors bought shares worth Rs 95.68 crore yesterday.

Bullion prices
Gold prices recovered by Rs 25 to Rs 30,825 per 10 grams at the bullion market. Silver, however, remained under selling pressure and shed another Rs 50 at Rs 39,150 per kg. Read more

The Sensex was trading down by over 80 points and the Nifty below 10,950 as the Narendra Modi Government will face the no-confidence motion brought in by TDP and other Opposition parties on Friday.
The Lok Sabha would take up the debate on Opposition-sponsored no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi Government brought by the TDP and Opposition parties, with Speaker Sumitra Mahajan admitting the notice.
The BSE index was down 80.91 points or 0.22 per cent at 36,292.53 and the NSE index down 38 points or 0.35 per cent at 10,942.45.
“The participation is sort of muted with individual portfolios not doing well. Only Nifty-based portfolios are protected ... frustrating investors,” said Deepak Jasani, head of retail research at HDFC Securities.
“They are disappointed their portfolio values do not seem to reflect Nifty's bullishness seen in recent times,” Jasani said.
Forex update
The dollar index versus a basket of six major currencies on Thursday rose 0.3 per cent to 95.344, nearing a 12-month high of 95.531 scaled on June 28. The euro was down 0.3 per cent at $1.1610. Read more
Brent crude drops to $72.50
Oil prices fell after official data showed an unexpected rise in US crude stockpiles, record high US output and increase in production by major oil exporters. Brent was down 40 cents at $72.50 a barrel by 0740 GMT. Read more
Kotak Bank net up 12%
Kotak Mahindra Bank has posted a 12.3 per cent increase in its net profit at Rs 1,024.94 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2018, with a 130.5 per cent increase in provisioning. The lender shares were trading down 3.64 per cent at Rs 1,351 on the BSE. Read more
LME zinc falls sharply
Three-month zinc on the LME rose as much as 2.1 per cent earlier in the session, but was down 3.6 per cent at $2,507.50 a tonne, as of 0739 GMT. In the previous session, the metal had gained 3.5 per cent, its biggest daily jump in almost a year. Read more
MCX resolves technical glitches
MCX has resolved the technical problem which had led to trading halts for the past few days. MCX and its vendors -- for software, hardware and the operating system -- have carried out a detailed analysis of the log records and observed that the incident occurred due to a low level of transmission control protocol packet. Zydus Cadila to market arthritis drug
Zydus Cadila has received final approval from the US health regulator for Piroxicam capsules, used for the treatment of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The company shares were trading down by 3.23 per cent at Rs 342.65 on the BSE. Read more

Technicals suggest Nifty has a strong support at 10,929 points whereas 11,046 acts as a strong resistance. The BSE index, which hit a record high on Wednesday, has a strong support at 36,278 and resistance at 36,692.

RBL Bank net profit jumps 35%
RBL Bank has registered 34.76 per cent increase in net profit at Rs 190.04 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2018, against Rs 141.02 crore a year ago. The lender shares were trading down by 1.36 per cent at Rs 557.25 on the BSE. Read more

Mindtree shares plunged nearly 9 per cent today as the IT firm has reported a 13 per cent decline in net profit on a sequential basis. After opening the day on a weak note, the stock further plunged 8.61 per cent to Rs 971 on the BSE. On the NSE, the shares tumbled 8.73 per cent to Rs 969. Read more

Global forex update
The dollar was down 0.1 per cent at 112.71 yen early on Thursday after going as high as 113.14 yen in the previous session, its highest since January 9. Against a basket of six major currencies, the greenback edged down 0.08 per cent to 95.006 after hitting a three-week high of 95.407 on Wednesday. Read more
Benchmark indices continued their uptrend on heavy buying in consumer durables, metal and auto stocks amid firm global cues. However, IT, TECk, healthcare and capital goods succumbed to selling pressure.
The Sensex was trading up 98.98 points or 0.27 per cent at 36,472.42 and the Nifty up 9.2 points or 0.08 per cent at 10,989.65.
Top five Sensex gainers were Vedanta, Bharti Airtel, Tata Motors, M&M and ONGC, while the major losers were HDFC, Coal India, TCS, L&T and Hero MotoCorp.
Traders however remained cautious as the Modi Government will face the no-confidence motion moved by TDP and other Opposition parties on Friday.
ITC Global no more an arm of parent

The Sensex retreated from intraday high of 36,516 and was trading marginally lower as investors stayed on the sidelines ahead of the Lok Sabha debate on the no-confidence motion moved by TDP and other Opposition parties against Narendra Modi Government on Friday.
At 9.45 am, the Sensex was down 41.04 points or 0.11 per cent at 36,332.40 and the Nifty down 25.4 points or 0.23 per cent at 10,955.05.
Top five Sensex gainers were ONGC, Bharti Airtel, HUL, M&M and Adani Ports, while the major losers were Tata Steel, SBI, Sun Pharma, Coal India and HDFC.
Barring auto, consumer durables and infrastructure, all other BSE sectoral indices were trading in the red.
