The benchmark index snapped two-day winning streak and lost 53 points on profit booking.

Sensex opened on a positive note at 24,909 against the previous close of 24,859. It made a high of 24,926 and low of 24,774 before closing at 24,806. The turnover on BSE was up at ₹4,468 crore against ₹4,084 crore registered on Tuesday.

On NSE, Nifty was down 14 points at 7,402.

Coal India declined one per cent to ₹390 after the company during market hours said the Board of Directors has approved proposal to amend the "Object Clause" of Memorandum of Association of the company to set up surface coal gasification project at Talcher. Since the main object clause of MoA of CIL does not contain the provision of manufacturing of urea-ammonium nitrate, fertilisers and associated products, it was decided to amend the MoA, it said.

Metal shares extended recent rise triggered by strong manufacturing data from China, which is the world's largest consumer of copper and aluminium.

Shares of Tata Steel and Steel Authority of India extended gains on reports that the two companies have restarted most of their iron ore mines in Odisha after getting new permits from the state

The major gainers for the day include IDBI Bank (16%), Suzlon Energy (10%), Indiabulls Real Estate (9%), Max India (9%), JSW Energy (7%), Crompton Greaves (7%), Union Bank (7%), Jain Irrigation (7%) and Syndicate Bank (7%).

The prominent losers were Wockhardt (-4%), Shriram Trans (-4%), Idea Cellular (-3%), ABB India (-3%) and HCL Tech (-3%).
