It was a day when the bourses were five time periods in the green and six time periods in the red during intra-day trade. Both the indices closed in the green after rallying heavily during the last half-an-hour of trade.
The Nifty closed 36 points or 0.76 per cent up at 4,800.60 while the Sensex closed 132.16 points or 0.83 per cent up at 16,002.50.
“It was a total lack of confidence on the part of market participants that resulted in a see-saw kind of pattern,” said a day trader on Dalal Street.
“Short-covering towards the end of the day could perhaps have been the reason for the pullback.”
The volatility index IndiaVIX was down four per cent and closed at 28.11.
Hindalco, Grasim, SAIL, Jindal Steel and M&M were the top five Nifty gainers while RPower, L&T, Reliance Infra, BPCL and Ambuja Cements were the top five losers.
