About 28 lakh families in Kerala are insured under Rashtriya Swastya Bhima Yojana (RSBY) which is a joint venture of Union Government and the State Government. The insurance scheme envisages to cover families up to 5 members of BPL (Below Poverty Line) families for hospitalisation benefit up to an amount of Rs.30,000 per year.
The APL (Above Poverty Line) families also could be enrolled in the Scheme after payment of premium. The Scheme is being implemented through the Public Sector General Insurer, United India Insurance Company, in Kerala from 2009 onwards.
Mr V.Sajan, Deputy General Manager of United Insurance Company said that in the last financial year (2010-2011), the company had paid Rs149crore towards hospitalisation claim whereas the premium amount received was Rs79crore only.
In view of of the huge loss of Rs70 core, the premium amount was increased for the current year (2011-2012). Still the Company expects a loss of about Rs60crore by the end of this financial year, as the claim amount distributed for the last 4 months is about Rs100crores. The Company is efficiently implementing the scheme, since it is very much beneficial to the downtrodden families, he said in a statement.
