It is not as if IT majors alone go to college campuses for recruitment. Some old private banks, too, continue to eye this route, not merely to pick specialists officers but also to fill up existing vacancies.

Off campus recruitment, for instance, seems to be a favourite for Kumbakonam-headquartered City Union Bank.

According to the CUB Managing Director, Dr N. Kamakodi, the bank took to aggressive hiring only in the last four years or so.

“Recruitment is an ongoing process. We increased our headcount by 500, of which, 50 per cent was picked off campus, while the rest through open recruitment,” he told Business Line .

‘Cost effective'

“Campus recruitment seems very cost effective at this juncture. Our team visits 25-30 institutions in batches for this purpose. We have realised that practical orientation is the need of the day. The recruits are trained at our staff college in Kumbakonam and we give preference to existing employees' children,” the CUB Chief said.

Karur-headquartered Lakshmi Vilas Bank is also eyeing the campus for recruitment. The bank hired 400 people this year after a long time, said its Chief Executive, Mr P.R. Somasundaram.

IBPS help

While smaller banks such as CUB and LVB look to recruit off campus, Tamilnad Mercantile Bank, according to its Chief Executive, Mr A. K. Jagannathan, got approval from the bank's board for going ahead with the next round of recruitment in April. “We have requested the IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection) to conduct the written test for us,” he said.
