Jayarama Bhat’s decision to relinquish his post and hand over the baton to Mahabaleshwara MS came as a surprise to many.

When his decision was compared with that of MS Dhoni relinquishing his captaincy to Virat Kohli in the media interaction on Wednesday, both Bhat and Mahabaleshwara extended the cricket analogy to highlight the change-over.

Mahabaleshwara said Dhoni found a suitable successor when he was in his prime. “We (Bhat and Mahabaleshwara) played many partnerships. For the last five years we had many opportunities of playing the innings together,” Mahabaleshwara said.

Bhat agreed with the fact that it was a surprise for many, including his staff.

Stating that he wants to pave way for the younger generation, he said Mahabaleshwara was spotted early and being groomed for the top post. “Mahabaleshwar is 58 and I am 66,” he said.

It is also aimed at smooth transition of power and to set a good corporate governance practice, he added.

To a query on his his stint as MD and CEO, Bhat said he is satisfied with his performance. Challenges were many and his team was able to convert them into opportunities to emerge as a stronger bank, he added.
