Business correspondents

Mr Holla said that following the directions from the Government of India, 181 villages in the district are selected for providing banking business through business correspondents. The villagers will be provided with a biometric card, which identifies the thumb impression. This helps operation of savings bank accounts for receiving money under pension schemes and wage payment under MGNREG programme by the villagers without going to branches, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr M.S. Hasan, lead district officer from RBI, said that banks should initiate steps under the financial inclusion programme to generate demand for credit in rural areas.

Mr Holla said that as per RBI directions, a Financial Literacy and Credit Counselling Centre has been opened in the district. This centre takes the responsibility of educating people in rural areas on various aspects of banking, he added.
