Canara Bank has sought capital support of about Rs 1,000 crore from the Centre to fund its business expansion, primarily abroad, R.K. Dubey, Chairman and Managing Director, said here today.
He however ruled out raising capital from the domestic markets for now.
Canara Bank has received regulatory approval for opening a branch in Johannesberg in South Africa, he added.
Finance Minister P. Chidambaram had in Budget 2013-14 announced that he would provide a further amount of Rs 14,000 crore for capital infusion.
This was in addition to the Rs 12,517 crore infused into 13 public sector banks during 2012-13.
