For the first time, ICICI Bank’s Net banking services were disrupted for over 24 hours giving some anxious moments to customers.

The disruption was noticed by customers on Wednesday afternoon when the portal remained stuck with a message that the facility was not available due to some maintenance work, without mentioning any timeframe for its restoration.

This got customers worried as the bank always indicated the period of maintenance well in advance.

“This is worrisome in these days of hi-tech cyber crime. I am checking the portal once every three hours,” A. Janardhan, a bank customer working for an IT firm, told Business Line .

When contacted, a bank spokesperson confirmed the disruption of services and said the online operations were hit due to a technical snag and a team was working on figuring out the nature of the error, adding it was the first time that such a long disruption had occurred. When asked if it was the result of hacking, the spokesperson replied in the negative.  Some customers were seen discussing the issue at one of the bank branches at Khairatabad here after the beginning of business hours on Thursday morning. They expressed fear that the sudden disruption of services was due to possible hacking.

By the evening, the bank released a statement saying: “Due to an unavoidable maintenance activity for part of the day yesterday, our customers may not have been able to access the Web site temporarily. The functionalities have been restored and the site is currently functioning.”
