The gross premium underwritten in the non-life sector has increased 24 per cent at Rs 23,712 crore during April-August 2011 compared with Rs 19,114 crore in the year-ago period.
According to flash figures released by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) on Wednesday, the gross premium of private general insurance companies increased 26 per cent at Rs 9,861 crore (Rs 7,828 crore).
The public insurers posted comparatively lesser growth of 22.7 per cent with a gross premium collection of Rs 13,851 crore (Rs 11,285 crore).
In August 2011 alone, the total premium (of both life and non-life companies) increased 34 per cent at Rs 5,065 crore compared with Rs 3,752 crore in the same month last year, the IRDA said.
