India has recorded over 19.64 lakh Covid-19 cases since the start of the pandemic in February. The country recorded 19,64,536 new cases a day after it crossed the 19 lakh mark.
Of these, over 13.28 lakh persons have since recovered. There are 5,95,501 active infections in the country, currently. This means that there are nearly six lakh persons who are actively infected as of now, a majority of whom are in home isolation while the rest are hospitalised or have died.
The number of fresh cases recorded in the past 24 hours stands at 56,282. On the other hand, another 46,121 persons have recovered after a span of close to two weeks. Also, 904 persons have died over one day, the highest number of deaths in a single day till date, taking the total death toll to 40,699.
Those that get detected with Covid-19 spend nearly two weeks in home isolation, or even up to a month in hospitalisation in case of the disease is more severe. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and the States telephonically track patients in home isolation and receive reports from hospitals and go on to declare recoveries after understanding that the reported cases are experiencing no symptoms after undergoing isolation and treatment. While active cases are added every day as suspects get tested, recoveries are tracked over a period of two weeks to a month, to then be added to the daily MoHFW report.
Cases are on the rise in most States except Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Arunachal Pradesh, which have seen fewer active infections in the past 24 hours. However, the number of tests conducted in States every day also varies which may lead to slight variations in daily numbers.
The number of tests conducted on August 5 was over 6.64 lakh. Cumulative tests conducted since over six months have crossed 2.21 crore.
