India and Australia may bond over cricket as Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott leads a 30-member business team to India on Thursday.
While Sanjay Bhattacharyya, Joint Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, did not go into the specifics of Abbott’s two-day state visit beyond saying the two countries will sign a number of agreements, he said India has been in discussion with Australia for bringing to India the memorabilia of the cricket legend Don Bradman.
Briefing newspersons, Bhattacharyya said, “We have been working on that. Cricket will be a very strong bond as we take this relationship forward.”
The items on display could include the cricketing gear used by Bradman whose average of 99.94 from 6,996 runs scored in 52 matches remains unbeaten till date. Bradman’s career spanned from 1928 to 1948.
The Australian Prime Minister will visit a cricket stadium in Mumbai to meet Sachin Tendulkar, Adam Gilchrist and Brett Lee.
