Government departments, self-help groups and voluntary organisations will join hands here to observe Women’s Day.

Department of social justice has made preparations for two days of the observance on Thursday and Friday.

SIGNIFICANCE MORE

Kerala State Women’s Development Corporation (KSWDC) will spearhead the activities, an official spokesman said.

The State Women’s Commission, Gender Park, Kudumbasree Mission and Social Security Mission will be co-organisers.

Women’s Day assumes greater significance this year, coming as it does in the backdrop of a wave of public outcry against crimes against them, said M. K. Muneer, minister for social justice.

He also recalled the tough measures taken by the Central and State Governments in the matter.

TOUGH STAND

The Government and agencies working for women’s welfare have an obligation to protect the privacy and the rights of women. They will seek to reinforce the commitment during observance of Women’s Day this year.

Muneer will deliver a talk on relevance of Women’s Day in the current context at the Sree Moolam Club here on Thursday.

Renowned dancer and social activist Mallika Sarabhai and Swiss pianist Elizabeth Sombart will speak at the function.

Manjula Chellur, chief justice, high court of Kerala, will honour these two iconic women achievers, the spokesman said.

THEME DANCE

Sarabhai and Sombart will perform a specially-choreographed theme dance on the occasion.

Kerala Social Security Mission (KSSM) is organising a two-day free medical camp for cancer detection on Friday.

At a separate function the same day, members of Kudumbasree will share their success stories.

KSWDC will also host a play by the Abhinaya Theatre Research Centre. It will be followed by an interactive session.
