Every third victim of road accidents in Jamshedpur in the year 2010 was a teenager.

According to the study conducted by Behavioural Research Lab of XLRI School of Business and Human Resources, Jamshedpur, nearly 33 per cent were in the age group of 15-24 years.

Titled ‘Rash Driving Behaviour by Youth’, the study said that two-wheeler accidents increased by 11 per cent over the last three years in the city.

Interestingly, according to the study, peer pressure and opposite sex were the drivers for rash driving behaviour. Another analysis of the behaviour of bikers showed that they develop an attitude that sports bike are meant to be driven faster.

There has been nearly 26 per cent increase in the road accident fatalities in the last three years.

Releasing the study, Sanjeev Varshney, faculty member of XLRI and founder of the Behavioural Research Lab, said: “Rash driving behaviour of youth in Jamshedpur is threatening to reach alarming proportions.”

The study was carried out between October 2011 and January 2012 to explore reasons behind rash driving among the youth.

It also suggested measures to thwart such fatal accidents. Public information mediums like local newspaper ads, short videos clips in movie theatres should be used to create awareness.

The study said that adequate training and education, before permitting youngsters to drive, should be held.
