The Japan-based Onoshoku Machinery Co Ltd is looking at the Indian food industry in a big way for marketing its newly developed technical gas cooking machine (TGCM).

The technical gas cooking system developed by the company has the advantage of overcoming food preservation problems by using high barrier pouch for prepared food stuff with natural seasoning. This ensures long shelf life without refrigeration.

Mami Ono, manager, Overseas Department, Onoshoku Machinery, said the newly introduced method of injecting inert gas and seal will prevent changes in food flavour, texture and colour as a result of oxidisation and extends shelf life in room temperature.

Ono, who was here in connection with the marketing of the product, told Business Line that the company is in talks with various units in the seafood sector in Kochi as well as in government sector. Besides fishery sector, ready to eat products in agriculture and poultry can benefit from this technology, she claimed.

In India, a lot of food materials are abandoned due to absence of a proper technology in giving long shelf life to ready-to-eat products. The availability of adequate technology in preserving food will benefit the poor for emergency food, for hospital meals, meals for pilgrims etc, she said.

The TGC products are able to remain fresh in the room temperature condition for more than a year, she said, adding that the technology is best suited for Indian hot weather condition and also in the era of power shortage. The cost of the machine is in the range of Rs 1.75 crore.

On the marketing strategy, she said that the company has plans to sell 2 to 3 units per year in the Indian market and later to increase the sales depending on the demand.

“If we see more demand, we will set up a manufacturing facility in India to cater to the Indian food industry,” she added.

The company also introduced TGC ready-to-eat products, which are suitable for calorie-controlled meals for diabetics. The idea is to expand the line of retailing by developing unique selling products and menus.
